Cash Bail Processing Must Take Place In Open Court, CJ Martha Koome.

 Chief Justice Martha Koome has issued a new directive that cash bails be processed in open court henceforth in order to enhance transparency in the Judiciary.

CJ Koome stated that this is also in line with the Judiciary's adoption of technology to enable electronic payment of court fees, fines, and deposits, thereby improving efficiency of the judicial system.

According to the new directive issued on Thursday, every plea-taking session will have two Court Assistants.

“The first ‎assistant will support the Magistrate with various court duties, while the second ‎assistant will handle the processing of fine and cash bail payments,” stated the CJ.

“This includes generating invoices, providing copies to the accused, and facilitating payments through the online portal.”

Moreover, accused individuals who cannot make payments in open court will ‎receive an invoice and be given a reasonable period to settle their fines or cash ‎bail.

Cj Koome stated that committal warrants will be prepared for those who fail to pay by 4pm ‎on the day of their plea.‎

“These guidelines represent a significant step towards a more streamlined and technology-driven judicial system, ensuring timely and transparent handling of fines and cash bail, ultimately benefiting court users and the administration of justice,” she noted.

The Chief Justice added that all pleas will be registered by 9am and, if not possible, the court users’ committees will give further directions.

Wilson Sossion Mourns The Death Of His Mother Ruth Chepng’eno

Former Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and a former Nominated Member of Parliament representing workers' interests in Kenya's National Assembly, Wilson Sossion, has revealed news of his mother's passing. Sossion revealed in a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that his mother, Ruth Chepng'eno Sossion, collapsed at home and was declared dead upon arrival at Tenwek Mission Hospital. "It is with deep shock and sorrow that we announce the passing on to glory of our beloved mother Ruth Chepng’eno Sossion. She collapsed at home and was pronounced dead on arrival at Tenwek Hospital. May she Rest In Eternal Peace," Sossion stated. Sossion, known for his active role in Kenyan politics and education, served as the Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) from 2013 to 2017, after which he was nominated as a Member of Parliament by the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) in 2017.
