According to sources familiar with the investigation, the alleged perpetrator, believed to be a minor, now claims that she stabbed Maigo in self-defense, alleging that she had been a victim of rape.
She informed detectives that Maigo had picked her up by the roadside after she had been chased from her home due to a dispute with her guardian.
The 16-year-old suspect was brought before Magistrate Zainabu Abdul at the Milimani Law Courts on a miscellaneous application filed by Corporal Patrick Boge, who requested mental and age assessments before proceeding with murder charges.
The court granted the application, permitting the detectives to detain the accused for the next 21 days during ongoing investigations. Over this period, the suspect will undergo both age and mental assessments before facing trial.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is also looking into whether the suspect acted independently or under the influence of others. The girl was apprehended on Tuesday night following credible intelligence provided by a Kenyan who contacted the Fichua line of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Maigo's lifeless body was discovered on September 15th, with 25 stab wounds, in his bedroom, where two kitchen knives were found as evidence.
The police require additional time to forward the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review and guidance, in addition to presenting the respondent in court for further legal proceedings.
The case is scheduled for mention on October 18th.
